Il saggio di Oscar Wilde “The Soul of Man Under Socialism” (l’anima dell’uomo sotto il
socialismo) spesso viene citato per
diversi aforismi, ma nel complesso è poco conosciuto. La sua pubblicazione apparve nel febbraio 1891
sulla rivista “Fortnightly Review”; successivamete l’editore Frank Harris pare
l’abbia pubblicato subito dopo la morte
dell’autore (avvenuta a Parigi il 30 Novembre del 1900), ebbe una grande diffusione, e nel 1901
circolavano quattro traduzioni di cui
una in russo.
Ci sono commentatori di quest’opera che ritengono
che Oscar Wilde l’abbia prodotta a seguito di un incontro con B. Shaw e della sua frequentazione (1884) dei Fabiani,
socialisti contrari alla dottrina di Marx, che avevano preso il nome di Fabio il temporeggiatore, perché
volevano che il socialismo si instaurasse non con la violenza rivoluzionaria ma
con la propaganda e il convincimento. Nel
saggio di Oscar Wilde non ci sono riferimenti ai Fabiani, né a Marx, e neanche ad altre correnti del socialismo. Non
ci sono neanche indicazioni di metodo per arrivare al socialismo e neanche
indicazioni di forme transitorie per arrivare al socialismo. C’è però la chiara
indicazione della libertà dell’uomo come
fattore centrale ed essenziale per la costruzione del socialismo.
Ci sono altri commentatori di quest’opera che
la vogliono collocare nel filone del pensiero anarchico per le rintracciabili
affinità con il pensiero di Kropotkin e con il sistema di Godwin. * Ma va
anche notato che Oscar Wilde, evitò nell’opera richiami espliciti all’anarchismo.
Si può
affermare che il saggio di Oscar Wilde ha una sua particolare peculiarità; è l’occhio di un Artista che
guarda al socialismo.
L’Individualismo di cui parla Oscar Wilde, ed
il riconoscimento dell’individualità dell’uomo, sono le condizioni essenziali
per la costruzione del socialismo; di conseguenza,” l’Arte e l’Artista”
diventano il paradigma dell’Individualismo e del Socialismo; e nel saggio l’Autore dedica gran parte della
sua analisi al rapporto tra artista e pubblico.
Socialismi autoritari e nazionalisti, come
quelli venuti fuori dalle esperienze storiche del Novecento, sono ben lontani
dallo spirito del saggio di Oscar Wilde.
Il socialismo di Oscar Wilde, nel fare
riferimento alla libertà e
all’individualismo dell’uomo,
diventa un socialismo Divino, dove l’uomo riesce pienamente a realizzare
se stesso. La citazione continua di Cristo,
che fa Oscar Wilde, dà la misura di questa suo messaggio. La
realizzazione massima dell’Individualità di Cristo si viene ad avere nel
dolore; nel socialismo, di questo saggio
di Oscar Wilde, la massima
realizzazione individuale si avrà nella gioia.
Riproporre oggi questo saggio di Oscar Wilde
non è anacronistico; tutto il Novecento è stato costellato da esperienze di
socialismo autoritario (alcune con conseguenze terribili sulla libertà e la
vita degli uomini); molte di queste
esperienze si sono concluse con un ritorno ad un capitalismo con gradi di
sfruttamento che rasentano lo schiavismo.
L’incapacità del socialismo, evidenziata in
diverse esperienze del Novecento, di
coniugare la giustizia sociale con la libertà individuale è un nodo essenziale
della Storia. Una riflessione su questo saggio sicuramente aiuta in qualche
modo a capire; e forse l’ormai vecchio Oscar Wilde può stimolare qualche idea
per una nuova Storia dell’Uomo.*
